The Weight of Loss
The Weight of Loss, hosted by Lyle Kruger, is a podcast about a feeling everyone is familiar with, loss. Each episode will explore different types of loss through a mix […]
In Canada, many Indigenous communities have lost their cultural practices due to colonialism and forcible assimilation. This loss has left younger Indigenous generations with a severed connection to their ancestral heritage. As Canada adopts efforts of reconciliation and better representation of its Indigenous People, we can encourage these communities to feel empowered to reclaim their cultural identities. As time moves, though, people and traditions adapt. With the revival of these art forms, we can see how contemporary artists are breathing new life into their traditional practices in the context of today’s society. In the first episode of Reclaiming Creativity and Rewriting the Story, we look at the enduring tradition of glass beadwork and how different artists have woven it into their identities. With the help of Indigenous beadwork artists and fashion historians, we examine the historical roots and explore its integration into modern fashion. This episode is the first step to bridging historical gaps and unlearning colonial narratives so marginalized voices can reclaim agency over their stories and cultural legacies.
