Being able to say “I’m Canadian” is something that most people take for granted. Not a lot of people think of the place they’re from, but when you have more than one to choose from things can get complicated. Jade du Preez went searching for where she truly belongs whilst in Toronto on exchange from Scotland. She recruited two fellow exchange students, Luca del Fabbro and Jessica Conan, to help her navigate the murky waters of belonging; discussing family and where home is. As a third culture individual, Jade has lived in South Africa, Scotland and now Toronto, but saying “I’m South African” or “I’m Scottish” just doesn’t come easy to her, whereas Jessica is a through-and-through Scot and Luca doesn’t feel like he needs a home at all.
