The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, recently made a sarcastic comment degrading certain degrees and telling students they need to pursue core sectors like healthcare.
This struck a nerve with many, including us, who are pursuing a degree in journalism, one of those fields that is often looked down upon. It also struck a nerve with students who struggle to find jobs in most sectors upon graduation.
In our podcast, we interviewed a TMU student, Jacob D’Souza, in his first year at the RTA school, a graduated RTA student, Summer Hashmi, and a TMU journalism professor and CBC contributor, Shireen Ahmed. All three of them provided different perspectives, but all reinforced the value of people in the media. Jacob and Summer also went through their own challenges with finding jobs, as well as the anxiety of finding a job in a rough economy.
