Eating Disorders are a serious mental illness that impact many women and men around the world. Although many people have died from eating disorders, it’s not taken seriously as a real illness. According to the Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, more than 8 million people have an eating disorder. Three to five per cent of women aged 18 to 45 will experience a serious eating disorder in their lifetime, according to the Ontario government. Stephanie Lynne Ross explains how she lived with an eating disorder for most of her life. While Dr. Blake Woodside talks about the urgent need to develop new treatment. Also, Debbie Berlin, the executive director of Sheena’s Place discusses the charity’s goal in helping people with eating disorders. It’s clear that there isn’t an easy answer to know how people get eating disorders. But recovery is possible. It’s important to know if someone around you is suffering from an eating disorder and when it’s time to get help.
