Mothers who immigrate to Canada, feeling the heartache of time and distance stretching between themselves and their children, share one thing in common: They are searching for a better life for their families. After learning the story of Mike Papa, a Filipino immigrant who hadn’t seen his mother for six years before reuniting in Canada, I needed to know more about the other mothers who take on this journey. They face years of separation and uncertainty, and the hopeful future they wait for doesn’t always arrive. Gisela Briceno and Olisa Thompson both work in newcomer services. They taught me how family separations happen in the immigration process and the lasting impact they have.
