Summary
Watching an athlete on TV during a national sporting event is exhilarating. It’s hard not to admire them for their superhuman strength and capabilities. But at some point, athletes cannot keep up with their sport at such a high level and they have to make the difficult decision to retire. How do athletes cope with this major change and potential loss of identity? On our first episode of “what comes next?”, we explore this question, focusing on how female athletes adjust to this transition. We speak with Jennifer Hawkrigg, a Canadian Olympic snowboarder who recently retired following her time at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Jennifer opens up about her journey— from the start of her athletic career to retirement, and how she’s found new passions since retiring. We also sit down with two experts Kimberley Dawson and Frances Flint, who share their expertise in sport psychology, retirement and mental health.
