Audio Only with Mia and Mari is a podcast about podcasts… we are just getting started in podcasting and Audio Only will highlight not only our love for storytelling through audio but also what it takes to create a podcast. In our episodes, we will explore audio drama narratives and how fictional truths can get at larger truths than non-fiction. For our first episode, we are looking at Epiphany, an audio narrative created by fourth-year media production students at Toronto Metropolitan University. We talked to Haylee Thompson, the creator of the project, as well as Addison Holley, who directed Epiphany. And for an expert perspective, we talked to Chris Tolley, co-producer and co-host of the CBC podcast, PlayME.
Mia Johnson and Mariana Schuetze are the co-hosts of the Audio Only podcast. They are both third-year Journalism students at TMU, and this podcast was done as an assignment for their Podcasting and Radio Basics class. Haylee Thompson is the creator, lead writer and co-producer of Epiphany. The audio narrative started as her final-year practicum project. (Elias Wong/Epiphany)In a Zoom interview led by Audio Only co-host Mia Johnson, Chris Tolley talked about his work as a host of the podcast PlayME and how to tell stories effectively using the audio format. (Mariana Schuetze/TMU)Besides directing, Addison Holley is also an accomplished voice actor. She said her previous experience with voice work is what drew her to Epiphany. (Elias Wong/Epiphany)Addison Holley, and Epiphany’s sound engineer, Matt Major worked together, along with Haylee Thompson and Drake Sanderson, on editing Epiphany. Most of their editing sessions took place on the editing suites at the Media Production department. (Mariana Schuetze/TMU)Addison Holley, the director, carries around this big binder with Epiphany’s script full of directing notes. (Elias Wong/Epiphany)
