University students are always looking for ways to make money to cover their long list of expenses. Working at a restaurant is common for students, as it’s a great way of making extra cash through tips. Unfortunately, most women who work in this industry are faced with unwanted sexual advances from managers, coworkers and customers. Two university students who are far too familiar with this treatment share their experiences of waitressing at a restaurant.
Leah DeVries, a third-year Creative Industries student at Ryerson University, has years of experience in waitressing. She recalls the days she worked at a burger joint in Toronto and was subjected to sexual harassment almost every shift.
Katrina Wugalter, a third-year Psychology and Neuroscience student at University of Toronto, used to work at a restaurant in Edmonton before she moved to Toronto. She as well experienced sexual harassment at a restaurant and shares her most memorable encounter with a customer.
