You may have come across it down the YouTube rabbit hole — ASMR videos have become an Internet phenomenon within the last several years. ASMR content creators, known as ASMRtists, speak softly into microphones to create a tingling and calming sensation for the listener. Making sounds with everyday objects like paintbrushes, combs and latex gloves, ASMRtists act out role-plays and give the listener personal attention to soothe their nerves and help them fall asleep. AshleyEhSMR, a GTA-based ASMRtist, started listening to ASMR to alleviate her own anxiety and depression as a result of her chronic illness. Through ASMR, she found a community of like-minded individuals who understand and support one another online.
