Deborah Newman is a trailblazer in the Canadian Correctional Services. Beginning in the late 1970s as a probation and parole officer in the male-dominated industry, she faced a barrage of sexism and sexual harassment as she made her way up the force. Over decades, she went from officer, to manager, to superintendent and finally, Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Correctional Services and Community Safety. Once at the top, she helped make change – helping the women who would join the industry in the years to come. This is her story:
