“The M and N Podcast” is a show in which we discuss issues we feel aren’t getting enough coverage and need to be discussed. It is hosted by Michael Mazzei and Nick Wapachee, two third-year students in the journalism program at Ryerson.

In this pilot episode, we discuss how indigenous people are leaving their mark using creative expressions to remind other Canadians that indigenous people are still here.

Here’s the full podcast included below. Next week’s episode will be about the state of Canadian politics and how it can be better covered. We hope you will enjoy!

Side note: The song you will hear during the podcast is called “Night Sky” by Classic Roots, and has been compensated with the artist separately.

Our featured guest is Joshua De Perry, more widely known as Classic Roots. He is a DJ, producer, and pow wow dancer for over a decade. Originally from a small community called Long Lake 58 First Nation which is near Thunder Bay, he intertwines powwow dance with techno music.

We are also joined by Jenn Harper, the founder of Cheekbone Beauty Cosmetics. She created this brand to support First Nation education, specifically for Cindy Blackstock’s First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. 10% of the money Harper makes goes directly to the society.

Amanda Thompson, part of the Flag Pole First Nations and an academic student advisor for the Ryerson Aboriginal Student Services (RASS), also discussed with us today. A Ryerson graduate in 2007, she works with RASS to help indigenous students transition to an academic setting through their workshops, part of which is arts and crafts.

Some photos of the guests and the hosts are included in the slideshow below.
