Welcome to this week’s episode of Living Leashed that focuses on the pit bull breed ban placed in Ontario in 2005. Featuring Whitby Deputy Mayor Steve Lee, along with Veterinarian Joey Tang from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) and a few other perspectives to investigate how the ban has affected Ontario over the last two decades.

Your hosts, Kent Vernon and Rachel Young, navigate tough topics with dog owners, Veterinarians, and other officials that impact the laws and care of animals. Our goal is to dig deeper into the things animal lovers should know and help educate and investigate to better understand the lives of these companion pets.

The breeds of dogs currently banned are…

  • Pitbull Terriers
  • American Staffordshire Terriers
  • American Pit Bull Terriers
  • Other bully breed mixes with similar characteristics

It is clear that Pit bull-type dogs are often perceived as “scary” breeds, but what makes them more aggressive than other dogs? Tang mentions that the people who own pit bull-type breeds and enter them into dog fights or influence aggressive behaviour are actually what created the stereotype.

Do you avoid certain breeds? You may be “breedist”- this term is used by Emma Feasby, a Veterinary Technician and dog owner, who uses it to describe when breeds are treated differently due to a stereotype or other biological misconception.
